Final Essay - Freya

Tourism is travels for the purposes of leisure and business. In this day and age, international tourism has become an important industry in the world trade, and this trend is still continuing to rise. A recent survey made by the World Tourism Organization showed that the total export revenue of international tourism reached 946 billion dollars in 2008(WTO, 2010). Yet it is controversial about whether this booming industry is fortunate or not in terms of development, human beings hold various perspectives. Some of them believe that it promotes understanding between countries and development of countries, while the others argue that it only brings discord and damage. Personally, I believe that there are more merits than demerits generated by it.

Granted, tourism redounds to communication between the tourist and local communities. To begin with, it provides an opportunity of direct contact with different cultures. As Saint Augustine once said:” the world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page,” touring is a multi-sensory experience which other entertainment tools cannot bring (tourists can not only see the beautiful scenes and hear the sound, as they do with their laptop, iphone, but also touch the real things and even smell). What’s more, the empirical knowledge obtained during the real journey can help wipe out errors inherent in many people thoughts. For example, taking a trip of China can surely bring a divergent and new apperception of what not every Chinese could do Chinese Kong Fu. Conversely, most of them like doing morning exercises, such as jogging and dance.

In addition, tourism continuously accelerates the vitality of local economy, not only through directly visible consuming but also functioning in indirect aspects (Rose, J. 2002). It is obvious that there will be a rise in the local labor ratio on account of more opportunities of employment in retails, department stores and transportation, etc. In the meantime, the tax revenue also will be augmented rapidly for the local government to re-build and optimize the native infrastructure. The most important point here is that international tourism can strengthen and increase mutual trust in distinct regions.

Nonetheless, tourism also produces some problems. Nowadays, the modem economy drives the pure culture into commoditization due to attracting tourists as many as possible (Smith, M. K. 2006). Thus the modification of indigenous heritage makes everything seem fake to the visitors, while the coming of tourists may be regarded as an invasion upon the lives by many native residents. Moreover, colossal touring population may put a strain on the already stretched resource, and even seriously damage the ecological equilibrium. It signifies that excessive exploration and a lot of indecomposable rubbish led behind by touring people constitute chronic and destructive environmental disaster to tourist spots.

In the final analysis, there is no doubt that tourism brings an amount of chances to different areas in both communication of culture and sustainable development of economy. However, it may also spawn extremely bad influence on the environment and local society. Like a double-edged sword, humankind should use it in a right way, bringing its strengths into full play and diminishing its weaknesses to the least extent. Shortly, as far as I am concerned, it is positive that there are fruitful advantages of tourism currently.

Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs ? Iris

Each year, hundreds of millions of people travel around the world for leisure, business, and other various reasons. With rapid development of the tourism, this industry have brought large profits to the local community, not only in terms of the economic field but also in terms of the social environment. However, nowadays, there is an increased voice with respect to the cost from the development of tourism. It is believed that the development of tourism will destroy local nature environment, produce pollution and especially cause culture conflicts. Do the benefits of tourism out outweigh the cost?

First of all, according to the reports in 2008 international tourism generated US$ 946 billion, (€643 billion) in export earnings. (Jafari, 2006, p-237). Typically, travelers bring with them money which they inject into the local economic for the place was excellent of business. They could find the commercial opportunities in the landscapes, and supply the jobs for inhabitant, improve people’s life. This will stimulate the local economic, drive the industries development such as entertainment, food, and souvenirs. For example, due to the demand of travelers, many vocation villages were established in the countryside. Undeniably, this industry chain was an effective way to boost a region’s economic growth and produce mass profits. Furthermore, thanks to the profits of tourism, the local governments have enough fund to renovate the historical architecture for better preservation, and the value of old buildings will be utilized in maximization. More and more people could benefit from more knowledge of the history. Some natural spots such as national parks will also get adequate financial support to run on (Matthew, 2000).

In addition, tourism is an important vehicle for cultural exchange. People travel to different places, view a diversity of scenes that widen their horizon. They also bring fresh style to the local communities. They enjoy the local sight, food, also share with the local inhabitant about what life looks like in another part of the world. These visitors act like “ambassadors” on behalf of their countries and promote their countries. They play as a bridge to link up people from different places. For instance, when Chinese go aboard for sightseeing, they introduce Chinese food, culture and tea to foreigners, which attracts foreigners to visit China and promote Chinese culture and customs. This “win-win” mode obviously brings economic benefits as well.

However, tourism may also lead to conflicts between visitors and local resident such as culture shock. As well, the negative impact on environment and local culture can not be ignored. For example, innumerable people swarm into the same tourist destination and cause noise, congestion, and pollution. All of these break the peace of the local community, and the local inhabitants may prefer a peaceful life. Due to the different languages, Communication due to the difference in the language and culture barriers will result in some inevitable controversy, and even worse, inhabitants will feel uncomfortable by some undesirable behaviors such as speaking loudly and throwing paper everywhere.

In conclusion, the benefits of tourism are obvious. However, we should also pay more attention to its negative aspects. The government should find the right balance between the economic growth and local culture in developing tourism. I believe that there would be a right way to coordinate the conflicts so that the tourism industry will be more flourishing.

Final essay----Jing

Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?
With the development of society, tourism has become one of the most powerful and biggest industries in the development momentum of global economy. The industrial position and role of economy increase gradually in urban economic development social employment, driving force, as well as the promotion which is the key of culture and the environment becomes increasingly obvious.
Economic globalization benefits the world immensely, especially the prosperity of tourism. it has shows that figure of Chinese economic developmental rate in 2008.Receiving 130 million inbound tourists trips throughout the year, to achieve international tourism foreign exchange earnings from 40.843 billion dollars, respectively, over the previous year decreased by 1.4% and 2.6%; 1.712 billion times that the number of domestic tourists and revenue 874.93 billion yuan , an increase of 6.3% and 12.6%; Chinese citizens reached 45.8444 million passengers, have risen 11.9%; tourist income reaches 1.16 trillion yuan totally, have increased 5.8%.( The prospects for investment analysis and forecast report of Chinese tourism market 2010-2015)
It is a consensus that tourism can stimulate the economic development in a region, since tourism plays an important role in the acceleration of the improvement of service, such as transportation, accommodation, catering and other marginal business.
Furthermore, tourism can strengthen the interflow of cultures and traditions between the people in different regions. Trips to minority countries and regions render people a lot of new cultures and customs, which, presumably, have been handed down from old ages and enjoyed very splendid history. Formerly, people can only get some segments about the minorities from videos, films and other incomplete descriptions on books. Now, tourists have more opportunities to communicate or even live with the minority people and acquire first-hand knowledge about them, which provides the researchers with a lot of authentic information.
Admittedly, tourism damages the natural environment in some regions and spoils the peaceful life of them to some degree due to their frequent activities in the regions, the environment being deteriorated in some regions, which is not what we expected.
Traveling in a developing country the tourists from industrialized countries may sense the obvious hostility from local inhabitants. They may make the latter feel more miserable by the sharp contrast between them. The increase of international tourists will directly lead to the rise of price , which means nothing to the travelers but impose physical and economic pressure on the local residents. At this stage, the local citizens may attribute all this to the international travelers, who are unaware of what they have caused and are subject to disdain and disrespect
Generally, the popularity of English and tourism brings more advantages than damage to the regions, since it has enriched people’s knowledge and widened their horizons. But meanwhile, we should be on the alert for the damage to the regions and take effective means to tackle the problems tourism arouses.

Final essay--- Walter

The tourism is advancing at an amazing speed in the contemporary society. A recent study conducted by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) revealed that international tourism accounted for approximately 11 percent of the world export of goods and services.( Tourism Market Trends, 2005 Edition) But in the meantime, whether focus on developing tourist industry completely has become a highly controversy. Some people concern that tourism might cause some trouble in local area. This essay will show further discussion on this subject with exemplifications on both views.

Convincing arguments can be made that tourism can bring great economic and social effect on individuals, community and country. In the first place, the foreigners have the opportunities to experience the foreign culture by traveling. Also they are more likely to learn the customs through communicating with the local inhabits, which is more interactive and vivid than just watch through a TV or PC online video play feeling another culture. In the second place, tourism is one of the major sources of incomes for nations' economy. Specifically, international tourism substantially boosts the economy of communities in this country. Take China for example, international tourism has improved the level of the social infrastructure and service area over the past decades. Meanwhile, the tax revenue of regional and civic governments can be taken full use to invest more valuable purposing. Possible the growing tourism might become the one of reasons to accelerate the nation turn to the rich side. Singapore, known as one of the four small tigers in Asian is a typical case, whose tourism is one of the pillar industries in economy of Singapore. (DUBLIN -- Research and Markets, 2007-2009)

Nevertheless, as an old saying goes;” every rose has its thorn.”(Poison, second album Open Up And Say...Ahh!., 1988).International tourism may also result in unexpected problems such social issue and environments. To begin with, the majority of touring population may undermine the local ecology balance. Owing to the human desire for variety and exploration, the ecosystem and local inhabitant have been damaged seriously in the recent years. Moreover, the increasing touring populations between countries may raise the burden of the capacity in the urban. It would turn out a tough problem how to deal with the overload public transportation and residence issue. For example, the Shanghai 2010 Expo is approaching; it should be a good chance to present the image of the metro to the world and the same time the local government should spend large sum of money to solve a series complex solutions to maintain the operation of the metropolis orderly. Furthermore, the arising environment issue that the garbage tourists left behind and the vast amounts of fossil fuel consumed in transportation would threaten the environmental to the tourist destinations and cause the air pollution in long period.

Above all, I concede that international tourism may create some adverse effects. It should be worth developing tourism and encourage local community to spend more capital on the promotion of travel. On balance, I am convinced that while promoting international tourism, we should respect between the tourists and the local denizens harmony. This could become a win-win situation for society.

Final essay----Elden

Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?

As the society develops at a staggering rate, emerge plenty of social issues, among which the consequence of developing tourism is one of the fiercest, because tourism has been an important part of the society and any country demands the prosperity of this industry. Some people think that it is beneficial rather than detrimental, while others hold an opposite view.

It is hardly denied that tourism benefits our society. This is due to the fact that, as everyone knows, tourism brings governments a considerable economic result, which is good for the development of a city or an area. It is also accepted that tourism preserves cultural heritages in a special way. When a place becomes prevalent, with the power of media, the authorities may invest more budgets in its construction and pay more attention on its protection. Apart from that, individuals do need opportunities to get in touch with different kinds of culture, which means they should go travel to expand their outlook; therefore, the importance of tourism is irreplaceable. More precisely, tourism provides people with methodologies to experience a culture that they never meet before. Lastly, tourism can effectively publicize the image of cities. A positive image can easily influence the its development and attract more commercial opportunities.

On the other hand, tourism also has its downside. It may possibly damage the local environment which is the crucial part in the world, because environment can never be reborn. With an increasing number of tourists entering the tourist attraction, it is unavoidable that tourism may create a great number of wastes. Moreover, tourism may result in an erosion of culture, because the local culture may confront with the hit from outside world, which will lead to a serious consequence that the local culture may be replaced or even extinct. And the expenditure of governments on construction of tourism attractions is undeniably luxurious. Specifically, the income of tourism cannot always outweigh its investment, even though it is definitely alluring, which means that the spending may probably never be obtained. And it is generally believed that tourism may interfere with the normal lives of local residents. For instance, the noises that make by tourists can wake them up early in the Saturday mornings, which is indeed frustrating and detrimental to their health.

Speaking for myself, I am in favor of the point of view that benefits of tourism outweigh its costs. Although tourism may provoke certain consequences, its benefits are obviously essential. What should be taken into consideration now is how to balance the benefits and the costs, reaching a win-win situation.

essay-Ahmed

Tourism has always been considered as a benefit for the economy. It helps different areas of a country's economy. However this Major benefit has also disadvatanges. We will see in this essay how tourism benefit on economy and its disadvantages.

In order to attrack people, some countries have to upgrade their buldimgs or create ones. These actions benefit the populations. Indeed, tourism implies improving the infrastuctures I.e. Public goods. All the citizens benefit from these improvments. For exemple, the recent bulding of a new motorway linking BEijing and the airport has benefited both the Chinese and the local businesses. This may appear as an expenditure but it creates also jobs. It has also a good impact on the economy because it creates market shares. We have to highlight too that tourism brings currencies to developping countries. This helps them to import and export raw materials. It solves some of the issues those countries had to deal with.We have already said that tourism creates jobs. It is its main results. It creates formal jobs such as waiter but also informal jobs such as seller. In some countries like morrocco many people become seller in "sooks" ( sooks does mean market in Arabic ).We can also say that tourism contributes to the good image of a country .

We have seen that tourism is a good thing but as all good things it brings bad things too.First, even though it creates jobs the workers are not well paid. It only profits the businesses and not the local. We can ad as a disadvantage is the cultural aspect. In some countries there is a dress code which is important to follow but to attrack people they forget this dress code. Also there is the environmental area. Tourists are not careful with the environment and don't care about it.

In conclusion, we can say that tourism is a good and a bad thing as well. Now the question is to see how can we tranform it and make it better. We have to eliminate the disadvantages as we can and find a way to keep the benefits.I think that the governments have to work more on it , for example by doing more regulations and laws to protect local communities and the environment also.

Last important thing is the impact that the tourism has on the image of the country as said above. The governments should also work more on make tourists feel welcome , so they will stay more and spend more , and it will help the economy of the country and local people. It will raise the benefits of tourism.

Final essay-----Ian

With the development of science and technology, tourism has become indispensable part of people's normal life. With the improvement of people's living standard, the ideological change, many people want to use their travel to relieve the stress in their life, to relaxation and have a rest.Along with these, tourism has been paid more attention with people. This essay will discuss 'do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?

First ,there is the background of the tourism.Tourism Market Trends is the World Tourism, and it will make the profit will continue growing greatly.International tourist arrivals have continued to grow from 25 million in 1950, to 277 million in 1980,438 million in 1990, 684 million in 2000, and it already got the 922 million in 2008.(tourism highlights 2009 edition)

The benefits of the visitors and the local. As we all know that the tourist means the people to another place to visit and to have experience of the local life. They must will pay a lot of money in the hotel, souvenirs, food, shopping and also the transportation,it will makes the local economic development.More than 80 countries earned over 1 billion Dollars from international tourism in 2008.(World Tourism Organization 2009)

Through these we can see that the development of the tourism industry makes a great improvement for the local economic development. For the visitor are not only to relax and know the local culture, the local people will still get a lot of information they didnot know before. It also makes an effort to bring people and nations together and promote the global communication, make the place of tourism famous.(FIJET Introduction,http://www.fijet.net)And the tourism companies can provide more jobs to local residents. It will make a backward place to become rich and developed.Such as a lot of scenic in the mountain.

Everything has two sides. After talk such a lot of profit of the tourism, let us look at its shortcoming. The development of tourism will seriously affect the local environment and it will cause the waste of resources. The excursionists will make a lot of pollution, like pollute the water of the scenic, may destroy the the natural landscape or historic buildings. For example the Forbidden City, there were 100,000 people everyday visited it in the October holiday 2009,the road and steps were seriously damaged, they are all cultural relics. And this not the deliberate destruction. Many visitors leave their name by knife or the other things on the wall.Although the relevant departments will maintain these, but it will cost a large amount of money and manpower, and it also cannot keep the original appearance.(newweb.dpm.org.cn)If the government and related departments cannot adopt corresponding measures, the positive will seriously damage tourism resources and related local cultural and material possessions.

For the local situation,Large Numbers of tourists will lead to traffic jam, hotel customers overmuch, seriously affect the local residents normal life. The too much tourism will increase the produce of garbage, vegetation destruction and may lead to local people and tourists some conflict. The conflict may be caused by the price of the souvenirs, different of the culture, different language may cannot very good in communication.

There are also a lot of conflicts between the travel companies, they also want to have more market share and have contradiction with the other companies.Because the profit of the tourism is very big, ever travel companies and personal work want to get the money from the big cake. There will a lot of problems between the local people which are caused by the tourism.

For all what the essay mentioned, the advantages and disadvantages of tourism depends on the policy decision of local government and related departments, and large parts of the in tourist and local people's cultural quality. If people pay more attention on the protect the environment of the tourist place and the good solution of the problems, tourism will bring people more benefits.

Final essay----Taily

Tourism is an industry which provides people with opportunities to feel nature and enjoy an ideal environment. It has become a modern lifestyle for many people when they have vacation. With the integrating of global economy and the development of airplane, it is a good choice to travel another contry and this is international tourism. International tourism promotes the development of the economy and is vital for many countries, such such as Egypt, Greece and Thailand. However, as the saying goes “Every coin has two sides”, many problems occured because of the international tourism. In this essay, the shortcomings and merits of international tourism will be disscussed.

It is a controversial issue that whether the tourism will bring harm to the environment or not. International tourism may carry certain drawbacks socially and environmentally. Specifically. the influx of tourists may constitute an intrusion upon the lives of many local inhabitants. The behavior of tourists will make changes in the local culture, habits and values. It is universally acknowledged that tourism is an expression of hunman desire for variety and for exploration. As a consequence , some explorations on the part of international tourists is inevitable, which may in turn cause locals disconcerted. Moreover, vast touring populations between countries may seriously damage biodiversity and ecological equilibrium. Each person will produce 122 Kg CO2 from London to Paris only one way by plane. (The Observer, 29 January 2006)And the vast amounts of fossil fuel consumed in transportation influence environmental threats to the global warming. However, international tourism also take many merits to our society.

"International tourism receipts grew to $944 billion (euro 642 billion) in 2008, corresponding to an increase in real terms of 1.8% on 2007. When the export value of international passenger transport receipts is accounted for, total receipts in 2008 reached a record of $1.1 trillion, or over $3 billion a day."( The Observer,June 2009) Obviously, international tourism spawns even greater benefits on individual, communal, and societal levels. In the first place, it provides your real feeling that means you could touch, smell and hear ,not from TV or piture.Secondly, international tourism has greatly promoted the economic communities in the recipient country. At last but not the least, the experience acquired while traveling abroad can help to eliminate awareness of national culture tourists misunderstandings, and prejudices of many international understanding.

In conclusion, international tourism is benefit for economy and global communicating to know more information about another country. It privodes people real feeling and special experience for natural and society. However, international tourism will change the local culture and local government shoul protect it.What is more, the emission of CO2 which was produced in transportation had a strong impact on environment. Overall, the pollution problem will be solved in the future as the rapid development of technology, international tourism is a convenient and efficient way to know global village.

Final Essay--Sophie

Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?

In the last decades, advances in global communication have made it possible for people to travel in different places and countries than in the past.Yet when it comes to the merits or demerits of the tourism industry, some people believe that it has played a positive role in cross-culture contacting, increasing foreign currency revenue and broadening community horizons, etc.Whilst Others argue that it probably costs a huge sum of money to build supportive facilities and may also break the ecological balance. With a meticulous comparison and contrast, people may find many best reasons accounting for the significant of tourism, mainly,in terms of individual and country;despite, some inevitable drawbacks should not be ignored.

In the first place, the virtual advantages of travelling have become very convenient, safe and economical for human beings.Nowadays,it is not uncommon for excursionists to gain the various knowledge of geography, customs, cultures and lifestyles from the places of interests. In addition, backpacking is good for health. One who keeps him indoors all day long is likely to be sick.By hiking,we can obtain the chance to climb mountains, walk on foot,do more exercises and inhale more fresh air.Furthermore, wayfarers are encouraged to visit regions bequeathed with rich cultural heritage, see local people's colourful dress, join in celebrating their traditional festivals and experiences. It is no doubt that tourism can improve the well-being of indigenous inhabitants and keep the customs and beauty of local places.

Additionally, tourism vastly increases income to a particular area or country, not only via direct spending but also through taxation and the purchase of luxury goods which creates a larger market than would be possible with purely local spending. In many less developed countries, for instance, tourism acts an alternative to cash crops, improving trade and creating a more diversified economic base.By travelling, obviously,we foster understanding and create international bonds.More centrally, tourism helps to accelerate the city construction and its embellishment and helps solve or ease the social problem of unemployment(Jimino,2008,Post-travel Economy). In light of the booming industry,as known to all,the railways, highways and waterway transportation have greatly improved, plus the development of catering, recreational and souvenir trade.

On the contrary, without proper planning, tourism can cause considerable problems. For instance,in most all-inclusive package tours, more than 80 percent of travelers' fees go to the airlines, hotels and other international companies, not to local businesses or workers(Lyne,2009,On the travelling consumers). It seems that tourism may give rise to conflicts because tourists usually do not know much about the local language and culture. There maybe arise some misunderstanding or even disputes between the tourists and the local inhabitants.Eventually, visitors create pollution and have destroyed many beautiful scenic spots.

In the final analysis, insofar the tourist industry actually is defined as a key sector in the tertiary property and has been listed as the number one priority to be actively developed in many countries. In that sense, tourism is not only a vanguard industry ecotourism ventures but also a cradle of cultural heritage(Milian,2009,Globe-trotter).As the matter of fact, under a careful examination many benefits of journey can be obviously found than its drawbacks. All in all,it is no exaggeration to say that tourism can foster a climate of peace, prosperity and sustainable development by bringing together mankind of different cultures and nationalities in the future.

Finally essay ---susan

With the recent rapid economic development, the tourism is becoming more popular. “The World Tourism Organization(UNWTO) forecasts that international tourism will continue growing at the average annual rate of 4 %. By 2010, an estimated 937 million trips will be made.”(Jafari, 2006, pg. 237)Some people could easily say that tourism brings a lot of benefits for the society ,environment and economic. However, recently increasing costs is considered by others ,particularly in the environmental damage and cultural conflict. This essay will discuss whether tourism bring more advantages than disadvantages.
First, tourism is helpful for improving all aspects of society, such as quality of life, supporting facilities and services that benefit the whole community. When local government want to attract more tourist ,they do a lot of changes in public infrastructures, such as road ,public transport ,which give local people more convenient. For example, the Jiuzhaigou Valley where is a tourist attraction has a big change in this decade. In the past, local people lived with poor facilities, they had not public transport. On the contrary, now government worked hard in infrastructures for developing the travel industry. The local people enjoy these benefits.Secondly ,tourism plays essential role in economic. It is the fact that tourism brings a lot of dollars from visitor, inputs foreign cash.In addition to ,it not only creates jobs in the tertiary sector, it also encourages growth in the primary and secondary sectors of industry. This is known as the “multiplier effect which in its simplest form is how many times money spent by a tourist circulates through a country's economy.” (Theobald,1998,pg10.) Finally, increasing fund and revenue from tourists give a good support to protect environment and history policy. It is very normal thing that a lot of history places disappear because of lacking of fund investments .

However, some critics have a negative attitude that travel industry on the ground that it has a
number of bad influences in environmental and cultural .On the one hand ,it is reported by media that the government has exploited and destroy a majority of natural surroundings. For instance, there are some golf courses in the countryside for tourists and the needs of water for tourism has led to the local populace having their own water supplies cut or made more difficult or expensive to obtain. Moreover, this is a more serious problem that more and more Air travel result in global warming that change our climate .What is more, It could make poor countries more poverty.(Philip , 2001)On the other hand ,the difference in language ,culture, customs, and life style often result in conflicts between tourists and local residents.People from various countries and regions often have different attitudes towards the same thing or behavior, thus causing further misunderstanding.

In conclusion, Whatever the negative aspects of tourism, it cannot be denied that numerous profit attribute to mass tourism. It is not only improve life quality of local people but also enhance the revenues of government. In fact, many small countries develop very well because of the tourism industry such as Maldives and Nepal .(Navin Gupta, 2001)Moreover, it has a tremendous positive impact in protecting the famous historic places and natural beauty .By comparison with merits and demerits about travel industry ,I firmly held view that tourism brings more benefits outweigh the costs.

Final essay--Vivien

In recent years, with the development of society, a fast development of tourism industry had been seen in some developing countries.Tourism accounts for a significant, and growing, proportion of gross global product: an estimated 10.6% in 1996. In that year, 595 million trips were made abroad (an increase of 5.5% on 1995 and 77% on 1986). By 2010, an estimated 937 million trips will be made (Jacqueline Rose,september,2006).I think, tourism as a business activity has brought many benefits. The main reason for some developing countries to make great efforts to develop tourism industry is their urgent need to develop their economy. But everything has two sides, tourism also gives rise to a number of problems.

Tourism is a multibillion dollars industry that supports economic development. It is indicated the tourism industry did contribute to the economic development in many ways. As our know, China needs more and more foreign currencies for its modernization program. Tourism is one of the most important channels to obtain currencies, which is much needed in our socialist modernization. Tourism industry is contributes a lot to improve local people's living standard under good management. Also it is a way to at tract more foreign investment to prosper local economy. Secondly, tourism enables the Chinese people to know more about the outside world (Tourism Market Trends 2004 - World Overview & Tourism Topics ,January,2004). On the other hand, the foreigners who have visited China are deeply impressed by the latest developments of out country and the friendliness and hospitality of our people. Reports by visitors to China about how courteous and helpful most Chinese were to them are often printed in newspapers of many different countries. It is clear that tourism contributes a great deal to the friendship and mutual understanding between the Chinese people and people all over the world. Also, it can bring with the development of other relative industries such as restaurants, transportation, hotels, and the production and selling of local specialities like handicrafts, thus provide numerous job opportunities for local people. With the gradual expansion of tourism, the economy will be better and better.

At the same time, I think the tourisn industry not only benefit for econmic developing but also good for personal development.First of all, travel is a good way to relex. The main reasons why people travel is relaxation and pleasure.Second, travel is one of the best means for learning. People may have read or heard about something, and they can take some beautiful photos. If they are feel interesting, they can learn much during their travel about the cultural and biology of the place where they are visiting.. There is always good for them to learn through traveling.Third,The development of tourism can also promote international exchange and understanding of national cultures.I think the quality of people, also affects the country's economic development. If a person frequently travel, knowledge is more broad, their mind will open, also relatively open field of vision. No matter for personal development, or contribution to society, are very useful.

However, tourism also bring with some disadvantages. For one thing, a considerable number of restaurants, hotels, and roads are built in the scenic spots to meet the need of large number of the visitors, many vegetation are devastated, rubbish can be seen everywhere. Therefore, the environment of these scenic spots is destroyed at different extents. For another thing, some local cultures are damaged due to the intentional change by the local people to cater to the taste of the visitors.(Jacqueline Rose ,2002)

In brief, tourism industry does both positive and negative efforts to the developing countries. I think the government of those developing countries should attach more importance to protect the local environment and cultures when developing the tourism industry.

Final Essay---danko

Tourism, a smokeless industry is developing rapidly all over the world.Tourism as a form of enterprise brings a lot of benefits.Tourism accounts for a significant, and growing, proportion of gross global product: an estimated 10.6% in 1996. In that year, 595 million trips were made abroad (an increase of 5.5% in 1995 and 77% in  1986). By 2010, an estimated 937 million trips will be made. Total (direct and indirect) spending totalled $3.6 trillion, supporting at least 10% of global employment(http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=160). But in the mean time, there is much debate surrounding the issue of arguments for and against recreation industry. This essay will analyze tourist advantages and its disadvantages.

It is obvious that tourist can bring even greater benefits on individual ,communal and social. In the first place ,it affords traveler opportunities to experience a foreign or different city culture, an see hear touch or even smell the exotic things at the destination spots which is infinitely more interactive than just peering through a TV or PC screen at another culture .In the second place tourism has generated colossal numbers of employment opportunity. Take china for instance, with the development of tourism.Travel agency ,hotel or attractions need more people to service and then provide more employment. In the third place, tourism vastly increases income to a particular area or country, not only via direct spending but also through taxation and the purchase of luxury goods which creates a larger market than would be possible with purely local spending.(http://debatepedia.idebate.org/en/index.php/Debate:Tourism)

On the other hand ,tourism also impact environment and cultural .Firstly, construction pollution ,such as rental car exhaust and oil leaks, machinery used to build hotels, commercial airplanes, and airport construction(McLaren, 1998). Secondly, visiter affect the local residents,For example, heavy traffic cause by a sudden population increase .Over consumption causes problems such as water shortages, frequent loss of electricity. Thirdly, tourism will ruin the surroundings . Rubbish might be thrown, maintenance might be difficult because crowds of people come, ancient historic structures or relics might be damaged by people.

In sum,It is universally acknowledged that tourism is becoming an increasingly essential industry in the word. Even if , the travel craze puts a heavy burden on the traffic ,jamming railway stations and causing safety problems. Therefore, we shouldn’t neglect the new problems. As a matter of fact, the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs. The benefits of tourism is not only individual and company, but also the national and international. I am convinced that the government should take effective measures to solve the problems and keep the sustainable development of resource, environment, society and economy.

Final Essay---Alex

With the advance of the human civilization, there are an increasing number of people who have raised doubts about whether the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs. Nonetheless, after much thought, I reckon that tourism is more advantageous. In this essay, I will make an analysis of the reasons in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, from the economic point of view, the tourism is a major source of the country's financial revenue in many countries, and it is financially beneficial to the economic development. “In many less developed countries tourism acts as an alternative to cash crops, improving terms of trade and creating a more diversified economic base”
(From:http://debatepedia.idebate.org/en/index.php/Debate:Tourism). For example, the developing countries need an increasing amount of foreign currencies for its Toward Modernization. Tourism is one of the important channels to obtain such currencies. Furthermore, tourism facilitates the development of the catering business and transportation service as well. Additionally, the tourism makes primary contribution to the national income and tax revenue.

Secondly, from the tourist speaking, through the travel, people can improve the bad mood and rich their experience. Nowadays, more and more people feel the pressure from work, study, family and so on. I think go to travel is a better way to get relaxation and pleasure. On the one hand, people between indulges in the enjoyment of nature on holiday can be forget unpleasant experience of daily life. Traveler also can take a souvenir photo with beauty of the landscape, Reminisce about your favorite times together Friends and Family even after many years. On the other hand, traveling abroad can enrich one's knowledge; only by traveling can we see things outside our country. Travel in other countries, people More or less can learn foreign languages, it is help for communication. Moreover, it is undoubtedly bring more employment opportunity for local of people that develop tourism. Even so, those who lack education background can also be living by selling souvenirs or specialty.

Although both of viewpoints contain some truth, under no circumstances appropriate for us to keep blind to the other side of the coin. Frankly, I want to mention that tourism damages the natural environment and historical interest in some Lack of management regions, such as tourist throw their garbage, water pollution, and monuments have been destroyed. “Millions of feet have eroded paths in the Peak District and the Great Wall of China” (From:http://debatepedia.idebate.org/en/index.php/Debate:Tourism). Another, travelling also spoils the peaceful life of them to some extent because of the activity frequently in the minority regions, we can see most of scenic spots are add to the color of artificial, such as artificial hotels and restaurants; these destroyed strongly the scenic spots.

In conclusion, undeniable the tourism both have benefits and costs. However, to measure the pros and cons is a complex issue, in addition to Number of benefits and costs disparity, also includes the extent different for the benefits and costs. As far as tourism is concerned, a benefit aspect can be offset in a lot of costs. Therefore, for my part the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs.

final- essay--------------barry

Does the benefit of tourism outweigh the cost?
It is so crucial that we can not afford to make a single mistake .However, it is not always easy to make a prudent and satisfying choice .Sometimes we find ourselves involved in dilemma. After pondering this question on many occasions, I have finally reached the conclusion that benefit of tourism is something we have to balance it .In an essay with the thesis below, I will examine some reason for merit and demerit.

In the first place, I can see that one of the advantages of tourism seems obvious .It is claimed that the economy would be prosperity, the tourism would spend money in the country and lead the relevance of industry grow up and some company will invest the place where has the business opportunity .. With this activities of business, it would have profit to local people and give them the chance to work. Secondly, when the tourism become visit the country more and more. The government will do a lot of infrastructures such as transportation and environment which are to improve sightseeing place to keep attracting tourism . Last but not least as we know accompany with such a lot of foreigners who will make the local people open their mind .

At same time , moving on to the cost which is the visitor will bring into country. First of all , the pollution has high proportion .When tourism arrive the country where is their visiting place , they start to make the pollution.. Moreover, some of them would be vandalism such as leave their rubbish everywhere and it could be worse to draw some picture on the tree ever in the heritage .Those thing might the drawback form the visiting and all the people who live here should deserved. What’s more some places should be rest to sustainable but it could not be closed because a lot of visitor want to see it .Above all of them, we can see there are some influences for people who live there.

Compared with merit and demerit , it would not easy for us to say the benefits of tourism outweigh the cost .On the on hand all we can do is that to keep the tourism coming to country for visiting to help the economy and local people have the chance to work. On the other hand, the politician should do endeavor for reducing the cost from visitor. There has a good example to support this ideal which is sustainable for environment. With this purpose in mind, I think if we can do the balance of both of it.
It would have the duo-win between visitor and country.

As I mentioned before, the profit of visitor gives the local people have chance to work in their hometown, help the economy of country and people who live there will open their mind .By contrast, there are some budget you must to pay .We have pollution, vandalism to impact on our country and it will bad influence in the environment because it does not have time to recovery. This is essay I focus on tourism interact with country, it would easy to see from the information above .The coin has two side; we must try our best to balance it.

Final essay.......Nouf

Tourism play an important role for the states and people in terms of promoting economic and personal knowledge. There are also some people who think it's a waste of money and time. this essay will show that the benefits of tourism more than costs and point of view of some opponents.

Firstly, tourism are important economically to the state where it helps to improve the economic and financial situation. For example, Dubai, has risen its economy after tourism which is becoming the main income of the state. As the primary beneficiary companies responsible for organizing the work of the flights , and tourism have benefit through the facilities. It also helps the recovery of sales and market movement. Moreover, " provides governments with extra tax revenues each year through accommodation and restaurant taxes, airport taxes, sales taxes, park entrance fees, employee income tax" ( websait, tourismPorsCons ,2010) . In addition, brings new money into the economy and creates many jobs for the unemployed and student , it's also to improve the means of transport.

secondly, tourism helps a person to learn other cultures civilizations which helps to develop the knowledge to him. It also helps to learn other language than the mother langauge that help him to communicate with people who are frome other countries and to know their customs and traditions. Indeed, tourism helps the person to have a rest and relax fo a period of time and renewal of psychological. In addition, help to get a job and develop skills and knowledge through other methods of work and move it to his countery. Moreover, may change individual behaviour and family relationship to be better than before.

On the other hand, some people think that tourism may result in harassment of visitors perceived to be wealthy and an increase in crime. Also. can involve violations of human rights. Some people have been displaced from their lands and beaches because they are reserved for guests in hotels. " Loss of traditional values and culture through imitation of visitor behaviour or cultural diffusion resulting from normal , everyday interaction"(websait, geographyfieldwork/tourismPorsCons, 2010). In addition, there would be competing with the local population on the opportunities available facilities and recreational opportunities.

In conclusion, i think travel and visit other countries is more benefit than the budget of travel which helps people and economy to have more beneficial. As i said before about Dubai and about how tourism can help people to do many things positive.

Final essay-----------Anson

Tourism is a popular activity now spread rapidly of the world.More and more traveller swarmed to the scenery where have stream or palace which are more famous, irrespective internal or external. As tourism is increasingly seen as a money machine make countries open to the public, and the government fund on service to fascinate visitors with numerous profits.Followed increasing income from tourists, some problem such as pollution and culture impact exhibited to the goverment.Whether the benefits of tourism more than drawbacks or not arouse wide concern in society. This essay will discuss the influence of tourism by comparing the situation in a tourist city-Hawaii.

"Hawaii has become a major tourist destination that receives over six million visitors per year. It is a major contributor to the Hawaiian economy, so much so that it generates 10 billion dollars per year to the economy. From 1985 to 2010 the number of hotel rooms has been forecasted to double from 65 thousand to 132 thousand",(Lukasz Darowski&Jordan Strilchuk,2006,Negative Impact of Tourism on Hawaii Natives and Environment).Firstly, the report reveals that tourism is the main industry in Hawaii which brings a numerous profits(10 million) and taxation for government every year. Moreover, with a large amounts of tourists crowded into Hawaii, some tertiary industry has grew sharply such as the translator and guide has been required increasingly that means more oppotunities and work are supplied for natives.Thirdly, when authorities put the point on tourism, the public services will developing significantly,a huge budgets will invest to the highway, more hospital and community service will be built, all of these will more convenience of the residents.Absolutely, the diversification is not only happen in the economy.Since traveler visited to Hawaii, the government stress on culture preservation to protect natural culture, cause of cultural globalization.Furthermore, varouis eco-friendly project has been exploited like marine science, aquaculture and tropical agriculture.

Having examined benefits of tourism,we should consider negative impact. When it comes to globalization and tourism within Hawaii,a big diversity wave attack Hawaii. With the loss of traditional jobs many have turned to the industry to make a way of life which lead natives to abandon their natural life and change to a new style that will eventually create a new city substitute the local culture.Secondly, The economic development companioned with ecological damage:moutains of rubbish pile up at communities, thousands ton of Chemical poured into rivers, the problem of environment has been deteriorating. However the authorities like Hawaii developing more sustainable project can protect environment effectively.

To conclusion,it has been shown that despite the drawbacks that damage local culture and environmantal pollution, the numerous contributon of local economy and stimulate globalization cannot be neglect which supplied a large number of money to improve the level of life for natives. They clearly value the problem of trourism can be solve at a greater efficiency if government publish effective policy like eco-friendly project in Hawaii. Finally, the benefits of tourism reliable outweigh defect, but in the future, the government should find a way not only earn the profits, but also maintain sustainable development.

Final essay----Nero

In present-day society, increasing countries or cities pay more attention on tourism. In the mean time, whether the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs has sparked much debate. Some people assert that tourism brings many benefits, it deserves taking more actions. However, others feel that developing tourism has plenty of disadvantages. This essay will describe both the benefits and the costs of tourism, and discuss which one is more important.

Convincing arguments can be made that there are a vast number of benefits of tourism for the host destination. In the first place, tourism can promotes the development of local economy. Tourists cost plenty of money on diet, accommodation, transportation, souvenirs and the others. They bring great income to local area. For example, in Rwanda, the total tourism income 0f 2008 is 214 million dollars, comparing with 2007, it increased by 55%. Instead of their traditional coffee and tea exports, tourism industry became Rwanda's biggest foreign exchange earnings(Wang, 2008). Furthermore, tourist can reduce unemployment. As the increasing tourists, local people have more and more job opportunities(Holderfield, 1999), because more staffs are needed in the souvenir shops, hotels, restaurants, and much more.In the third place, tourism can improve the local traffic system. Local government have to spend more sources to improve the traffic system. If the transportation is convenient, more and more tourist will come. Lately, tourism can help the countries or the cities earn a good reputation. This means they can be known by more and more people and companies. Some companies could be interested in investing in the local economy.

Having looked at a number of benefits, we should now consider the disadvantage of tourism. Firstly, tourism influences local environment. The pollution which is caused by tourists comes from things such as dropping litter, car exhaust, oil leaks, commercial planes and the others(McLaren,1998). Secondly, vandalism of tourists damaged the monuments. For example, some tourists enjoy using hard objects(such as knives) to write their name on the monuments, and enjoy picking some flowers or branches from some endangered plants.Lastly, tourism also influences local culture. In order to meet the needs of a growing number of tourists, local government have to build some international hotel and restaurants. Some traditional building could be destroyed to build those hotel and restaurants.

Figure1.1. McDonald's is a good representation. Yet another goes up here in Guam (Mclaren,1998).

Having compared the benefits and the costs, we need to ask which one is more important. In my opinion, tourism is a double-edged sword. It can bring many benefits, but in the same time, it can also bring lots of losing. We should make a balance between them. At the same time of developing the tourism, the government should also focus on solving the environmental and culture problems, to limit the amount of tourists and opening time of the monuments to have enough time to solve pollution and repair damage, to promote traditional food or drink to more and more tourists.

In conclusion, I think this is not an either/or question. Undenibly, there are lots of advantage in tourism, and also tourism brings some disadvantages. The government should take more action on both of them. If we want a more long-term tourism development, the shortage of tourism must be undertood correctly.

Model Answer- Conclusions Activity

It has been shown that despite the distinct benefits that online learning can bring, especially cheapness and flexibility, these are not always efficient to dissuade students from attending classroom lessons. They clearly value membership of a group and personal contact with a teacher. There is a sense that internet teaching may be seen as second-class education, where the student is isolated from fruitful contact with his or her peers, and a more useful approach may be to view e-learning as a helpful add-on to taught courses, rather than an avenue to be followed exclusively.

Model Answer Introduction Homework

The last two decades have seen a steady increase in the demand for higher (i.e. university-level) education worldwide.  Rising costs in this sector have put pressure on national budgets, causing many countries to attempt to shift some of the cost to students, often in the form of loans.  A degree generally remains the key to better jobs and opportunities, yet if students have to pay a greater share of the cost this will discriminate against poorer families.  This essay examines the question of access to univeristy by comparing the situation in a developed country, the United States, with that of a developing country, Turkey.
