This Tuesday ( 9/2/10), our class will have it's first practice debate. The class will be divided into 2 groups and will research and prepare their assigned topics for the group debate Tuesday. The group will work together to prepare their argument and assign roles to each member. Participation, quality of research, and language of debating will all be important criteria to consider.
The following topics and groups will be used in the debate:
1. Global Warming: Should more action be taken?
Agree: Ahmed, Ian, Susan, Elden, Freya
Disagree: Nouf, Nero, Anson, Alex
2. Should adoption be legal for same-sex couples?
Agree: Barry, Sophie, Danko, Taily
Disagree: Iris, Vivien, Jing, Walter
Each group should have a:
- chairperson
- person who presents initial argument
- a note-taker
- person who provides a rebuttal to other side
- person who provides a summary/conclusion
** In addition, each group should note down at least 5 words that were difficult, unfamiliar, and important to the argument, (including the meaning and stress), to have ready for posting during the debate.
Your homework over the weekend will be to prepare for this debate. I will also give you some class time in the computer lab on Monday (3-4pm in Arts C 169) so you can work with your group.
