Hi everyone,
Here are the model notes I made for the news article. Use them as an idea for clear structure, abbreviations, symbols, and organization. Remember, these notes are a little longer than necessary, but they include all the information you should need from the article. If your notes can be followed clearly like this and include the main idea of the article, and if they are organized, then you should do well tomorrow. Good luck!

Source: BBC News (4/2/10) Internet addiction linked to depression. news.bbc.co.uk (accessed 4/2/10)
→ Connection b/w excessive internet use & depression
• study in the journal Psychopathology- 1.2% ppl are “internet addicts” (BBC News, 2010) and depressed
• mental health issues not def. caused by internet
• 1,319 ppl (found on social networking sites) asked ?’s to see if depressed
• a few obsessive users of internet- replacement for human interaction
→ Dr. Catriona Morrison- internet very important but not everyone can control use
• internet addicts 5x more depressed than other users
• results don’t prove which is cause- depression or internet addiction?
→ Addicts are already emotionally disturbed
• Dr. Vaughan Bell (Inst. Of Psychiatry King’s Coll. London)- these addicts already have emotional problems
• Prev. studies prove disturbed ppl use internet more
• Ppl also obsess over books, TV, etc → less social interaction
→ Internet as social tool?
• Dr. Andrew McCulloch (CEO Mental Health Found.) – internet can be useful → social relationships, pay bills, email
• Should not replace human interaction!
• Need personal relationships and exercise for good mental health
*** Main Idea:
- Internet doesn’t cause mental health problems
- substituting human interaction can cause mental health issues
