Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?
As the society develops at a staggering rate, emerge plenty of social issues, among which the consequence of developing tourism is one of the fiercest, because tourism has been an important part of the society and any country demands the prosperity of this industry. Some people think that it is beneficial rather than detrimental, while others hold an opposite view.
It is hardly denied that tourism benefits our society. This is due to the fact that, as everyone knows, tourism brings governments a considerable economic result, which is good for the development of a city or an area. It is also accepted that tourism preserves cultural heritages in a special way. When a place becomes prevalent, with the power of media, the authorities may invest more budgets in its construction and pay more attention on its protection. Apart from that, individuals do need opportunities to get in touch with different kinds of culture, which means they should go travel to expand their outlook; therefore, the importance of tourism is irreplaceable. More precisely, tourism provides people with methodologies to experience a culture that they never meet before. Lastly, tourism can effectively publicize the image of cities. A positive image can easily influence the its development and attract more commercial opportunities.
On the other hand, tourism also has its downside. It may possibly damage the local environment which is the crucial part in the world, because environment can never be reborn. With an increasing number of tourists entering the tourist attraction, it is unavoidable that tourism may create a great number of wastes. Moreover, tourism may result in an erosion of culture, because the local culture may confront with the hit from outside world, which will lead to a serious consequence that the local culture may be replaced or even extinct. And the expenditure of governments on construction of tourism attractions is undeniably luxurious. Specifically, the income of tourism cannot always outweigh its investment, even though it is definitely alluring, which means that the spending may probably never be obtained. And it is generally believed that tourism may interfere with the normal lives of local residents. For instance, the noises that make by tourists can wake them up early in the Saturday mornings, which is indeed frustrating and detrimental to their health.
Speaking for myself, I am in favor of the point of view that benefits of tourism outweigh its costs. Although tourism may provoke certain consequences, its benefits are obviously essential. What should be taken into consideration now is how to balance the benefits and the costs, reaching a win-win situation.

Elden,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very well balanced and well structured essay. You develop your ideas well and show a very clear argument. There are also frequent error-free complex sentences!
However, you don't include any references!!!! Part of the task was to do research and include references. This will bring down your mark as you did not complete the task.
A few points:
- very strong intro and conclusion
- very good use of topic sentences
- ** don't start sentences with 'And'
- very good use of transitional words
- incorrect use of vocab
ex: When a place becomes prevalent
( prevalent means widespread ---> here, you may want to use well-known, popular, famous)
