Final essay--Vivien

In recent years, with the development of society, a fast development of tourism industry had been seen in some developing countries.Tourism accounts for a significant, and growing, proportion of gross global product: an estimated 10.6% in 1996. In that year, 595 million trips were made abroad (an increase of 5.5% on 1995 and 77% on 1986). By 2010, an estimated 937 million trips will be made (Jacqueline Rose,september,2006).I think, tourism as a business activity has brought many benefits. The main reason for some developing countries to make great efforts to develop tourism industry is their urgent need to develop their economy. But everything has two sides, tourism also gives rise to a number of problems.

Tourism is a multibillion dollars industry that supports economic development.It is indicated the tourism industry did contribute to the economic development in many ways. As our know, China needs more and more foreign currencies for its modernization program. Tourism is one of the most important channels to obtain currencies, which is much needed in our socialist modernization. Tourism industry is contributes a lot to improve local people's living standard under good management. Also it is a way to at tract more foreign investment to prosper local economy. Secondly, tourism enables the Chinese people to know more about the outside world (Tourism Market Trends 2004 - World Overview & Tourism Topics ,January,2004). On the other hand, the foreigners who have visited China are deeply impressed by the latest developments of out country and the friendliness and hospitality of our people. Reports by visitors to China about how courteous and helpful most Chinese were to them are often printed in newspapers of many different countries. It is clear that tourism contributes a great deal to the friendship and mutual understanding between the Chinese people and people all over the world. Also, it can bring with the development of other relative industries such as restaurants,transportation,hotels, and the production and selling of local specialities like handicrafts, thus provide numerous job opportunities for local people. With the gradual expansion of tourism, the economy will be better and better.

At the same time, I think the tourisn industry not only benefit for econmic developing but also good for personal development.First of all, travel is a good way to relex. The main reasons why people travel is relaxation and pleasure.Second, travel is one of the best means for learning. People may have read or heard about something, and they can take some beautiful photos. If they are feel interesting, they can learn much during their travel about the cultural and biology of the place where they are visiting.. There is always good for them to learn through traveling.Third,The development of tourism can also promote international exchange and understanding of national cultures.I think the quality of people, also affects the country's economic development. If a person frequently travel, knowledge is more broad,their mind will open, also relatively open field of vision. No matter for personal development, or contribution to society, are very useful.

However, tourism also bring with some disadvantages. For one thing, a considerable number of restaurants, hotels, and roads are built in the scenic spots to meet the need of large number of the visitors, many vegetation are devastated, rubbish can be seen everywhere. Therefore, the environment of these scenic spots is destroyed at different extents. For another thing, some local cultures are damaged due to the intentional change by the local people to cater to the taste of the visitors.(Jacqueline Rose ,2002)

In brief, tourism industry does both positive and negative efforts to the developing countries. I think the government of those developing countries should attach more importance to protect the local environment and cultures when developing the tourism industry.

  1. Vivien,

    This is a well developed essay overall with a very clear argument for the benefits of tourism. Your 'costs' section could have included another supporting idea to make the paragraph stronger. Your introduction is strong, but your conclusion does not provide a very clear argument and point of view.

    - remember, in-text references only require a last name and year
    ex: (Jacqueline Rose ,2002) --> (Rose,2002)

    *** where is this reference in your bibliography at the end?

    - If you quote a text exactly, you must use "" marks!

    ex: " Tourism accounts for a significant, and growing, proportion of gross global product: an estimated 10.6% in 1996. In that year, 595 million trips were made abroad (an increase of 5.5% on 1995 and 77% on 1986). By 2010, an estimated 937 million trips will be made (Jacqueline Rose,september,2006)."

    - good use of transitions

    - some unclear vocab
    ex: which is much needed in our socialist modernization

    --> do you mean modern society? or modern socialist society?
